DADT, Damyata, Dayadhvam
Author:
trinityofone
Warnings: institutionalized homophobia, corporal punishment
Length: One-shot; ~8600 words
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Categories: Sci-Fi, Romance, AU
Summary: He was aware of the controversy surrounding the application of DADT policy to an international expedition—and an international expedition to another galaxy at that—but in the end, it didn't matter. Everyone got the chip, or they didn't go.
Review:
The institution of DADT, though at the time well-intentioned, was a heavy blow to LGBT rights. Since its passing in 1993, over 13,500* service members have been fired under this law. Imagine if the military decided to go one step further, and you get this fic.
The smooth, understated horror in this fic is at once amazing and disturbing.
trinityofone manages to create not only an interesting story, but one with a powerful, thought-provoking message. Her use of metaphor is well-executed and a joy to read. You feel deeply for Rodney and John, and watch helplessly as they struggle against a powerful and corrupt institution, unsure of what will happen next. Rest assured though, there's a happy ending.
