Review:
First off, I'd like to say that
cesperanza is an amazing and prolific author, and if I had the time, I'd try and rec everything that she'd ever written ever. But I don't, so I'm just gonna point out the ones I've enjoyed the most. That being said, Hanged Man is one of those fics that is both enjoyable, and really makes you think. This fic doesn't deal with the 'shit, I think I'm gay' moment before the two protagonists get together, and instead Ray and Fraser fight to define their newfound relationship. Ray struggles to reconcile what he feels for Fraser with what he thinks as 'normal', and Fraser struggles to keep it all together. Hanged Man is one of only a few fics that I've found that deal with the struggles and fears that keep you in the closet and
cesperanza captures the fears that hound you day after day, unrelentingly and unwaveringly with style and insight. Both Ray's characterization, and his slow acceptance of his sexuality are brilliant. The ending is wonderful, though admittedly I'm a little iffy about it in some places, but considering that due South was set in the '90s, the solution that Fraser and Ray come to is appropriate.
